Whitiau Scientific Reserve

A nationally significant system of coastal dunes on the north side of the Whangaehu River. Shaped by wind, sand, and shifting watercourses, the reserve retains intact dune forms, plains, and wetlands that continue to define its landform and ecology.As part of a once-extensive dune landscape, Whitiau supported indigenous dune and wetland species adapted to dynamic, sandy conditions.
