  • Apodasmia similis | jointed wire rush, oioi

A hardy reed that thrives in both wet and dry areas, making it an excellent choice for problem sites. Its fine grey-green leaves with brownish joints form dense, upright clumps, while flowers appear from late spring to summer, adding seasonal interest and softening its structure. Naturally found in coastal wetlands, estuaries, and lakes, Oioi tolerates strong winds, tough coastal conditions, and can even grow inland or in alpine areas. This reed spreads slowly via underground rhizomes, making it non-invasive and ideal for defined garden beds, mass plantings, or container gardens. Its versatility, resilience, and sculptural form make it increasingly popular in modern landscapes, where it contrasts beautifully with hard surfaces and adds dramatic, natural texture.
