  • Carex pumila | sand sedge

A low-growing coastal sedge that forms a dense, mat-like groundcover on sandy and gravelly beaches. The coarse, light green foliage creates a distinctive texture while helping bind loose substrates, making it highly effective for dune and coastal stabilisation. Thriving in sunny, well-drained, exposed sites, it is well adapted to harsh seaside conditions where few other plants persist. Hardy and evergreen, it is an important species for dune restoration projects and coastal gardens, providing both ecological function and reliable ground cover in challenging environments.
