three-square sedge
Schoenoplectus pungens | three-square sedge
A sedge that forms dense stands of dark green, rough-textured foliage. Upright, triangular stems carry blue flowers followed by brown seed heads through the warmer months, giving strong vertical structure in wetland settings. It spreads readily by both seed and creeping rhizomes, allowing it to colonise suitable sites effectively.
Most commonly found in coastal wetlands, it is tolerant of saline conditions and performs well in both fresh and brackish water. Well suited to wetlands, pond margins, streamsides, and restoration planting, it is effective for erosion control and stabilisation while adding robust form and texture to water-based landscapes.
