Pimelea villosa | sand daphne, autetaranga, toroheke, sand pimelea

A tough, prostrate shrub that forms a dense, sprawling mat, perfect for covering exposed ground. Its small, oblong leaves are blue-grey on top and pale, silky underneath, creating a subtle colour contrast throughout the year. From spring to autumn, clusters of small white flowers appear, providing seasonal interest. Naturally found on coastal sand dunes, it thrives in full sun, open sites, and well-drained soils. Excellent for stabilising ground in seaside areas, it offers reliable performance and strong visual contrast in tough, dry conditions.
This coastal groundcover is threatened across much of Aotearoa. Its dune habitat is increasingly under pressure from invasive marram grass, trampling by livestock, vehicle damage, and fire. Even where it survives, fruiting plants have become rare, likely due to the decline of native pollinators. Some southern populations are now considered among the most at risk, despite having seemingly healthy sex ratios.

Further research is underway to better understand how to support its recovery in the wild.
