tauhinu
Ozothamnus leptophyllus | tauhinu
Tauhinu is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub found widely along coasts, especially on mid-dunes and dry, exposed hillsides. Its fine, silver-green foliage gives it a soft, shimmering appearance, while clusters of small cream flowers in winter and spring are followed by fluffy seed heads that drift away on the wind. As a natural coloniser, it often establishes quickly on bare ground, creating shelter and improving conditions for other native species to take root.
In gardens, Tauhinu’s golden-green foliage and scented flowers add texture and light to coastal or dry plantings. Hardy, frost-tolerant, and thriving in sunny, exposed locations, it is excellent for stabilising poor soils, creating shelter, or forming part of a mixed native hedge. Regular trimming helps maintain a compact, attractive form.
