Found from coastal areas through to higher elevations, this fern is often seen in  in damp seepages and moist ground, sometimes growing alongside Machaerina sinclairii. This fern suits naturalistic plantings that echo limestone or seepage environments, rather than exposed or heavily compacted sites.

This fern is easily grown from fresh spores, and young plants transplant readily. It performs well in pots or planted out in sunny to lightly shaded positions with moist, free-draining, fertile soil. Regular applications of lime suit its natural preference for calcareous conditions. While reasonably hardy, it does not tolerate prolonged drought or heavy frosts.
