pukio
Carex virgata | pukio, swamp sedge
A vigorous native sedge suited to swamps, drain margins, seepages, and wet pastures. A strong coloniser, it is widely used in wetland planting and revegetation, tolerating fluctuating conditions from prolonged inundation to seasonal dryness. More drought tolerant and generally shorter than Carex secta, it is hardy, fast growing, and establishes reliably in challenging sites. Ideal for wetland restoration, riparian zones, and erosion-prone banks, its dense roots stabilise soil and protect waterways.
