huruhuruwhenua

foliage palette: dark green
  • Asplenium oblongifolium | huruhuruwhenua, shining spleenwort

A hardy and attractive fern with glossy, leathery bright green fronds that radiate in a tidy rosette. Fronds can reach 1 m or more in length, giving the plant a bold yet refined presence. It  is well suited to native gardens, forest plantings, or as underplanting beneath shrubs and trees. This versatile fern tolerates coastal conditions and light frost once established and performs reliably with minimal maintenance. While adaptable to a range of conditions, it prefers dry, shaded sites and does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging. Shining spleenwort can also be grown successfully as a pot plant or in a hanging basket, making it suitable for both outdoor and sheltered settings.
