A hardy, quick-establishing shrub with rich purple flowers and deep green, lobed foliage. Its stems often show a noticeable purple tint, helping distinguish it from its close relative, Solanum aviculare. Poroporo grows rapidly and responds well to pruning, making it excellent as a nurse plant that provides shelter for slower-growing species in new or exposed plantings. Once other species are well established, its shallow root system allows for easy removal if required.

Poroporo was once commercially cultivated in Taranaki (late 1970s–early 1980s) for the alkaloid solasodine, a precursor used in the production of steroid medications, including contraceptives and anti-inflammatory drugs.
