about 'of this place.'
<work in progress>
This website is designed as part of a Masters thesis in Landscape architecture for Victoria University of Wellington 2025 by Sarah Cantillon
The research centers around biodiversity decline in Aotearoa and primarily how to reconnect people with place-specific nature and in turn, decolonisation through planting. As a part of that process the author has built a digital resource called ‘of this place’ which through filtering functionality builds personalised native planting palettes for species endemic to each of New Zealand’s eco-regions. This resource fills a gap in the market, lying at the intersection of scientific knowledge and usability in order to help people plant for their specific ecosystem; thereby contributing to creating healthy, resilient and more biodiverse environments.
I wish to acknowledge that the term 'plants of place' was coined by Maria Rodgers in her PhD research at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. It was introduced in her paper 'Plants of place: justice through (re)planting Aotearoa New Zealand’s urban natural heritage' https://doi.org/10.25455/wgtn.23639454 Maria Rodgers' supervisors are Ocean Ripeka Mercier and Maibritt Pedersen Zari.
