The Auckland eco-region encompasses a diverse range of landscapes and habitats. Rodney and Waitākere are hilly districts with important remnants of kauri and podocarp forest. The urban Tāmaki district is shaped by the Waitematā Harbour and volcanic cones, with significant wetland habitats. Manukau and Awhitu form low-lying coastal areas of global importance, with Manukau Harbour serving as a key wintering ground for migratory wading birds. Offshore, the Inner Gulf Islands and Rangitoto provide unique ecosystems and vital refuges for native birds, with Rangitoto showcasing early forest development on volcanic land. The Hunua district, with its extensive native forests, remains a stronghold for rare species such as kōkako and bellbird.
