Kunzea robusta | rawirinui, kānuka

 

A fast-growing NZ native tree with small, soft, aromatic leaves. In early summer, kānuka is covered in masses of tiny white flowers that provide valuable nectar for bees, insects, and birds. Hardy and adaptable, it thrives in coastal wind, frost, drought, and poor soils, making it an ideal shelter species or screen. Often used in restoration and riparian planting, it supports ecosystem recovery by creating cover and improving growing conditions for slower-establishing natives. Evergreen and reliable, it is a great choice for both home gardens and larger landscapes.

Kānuka played an important role in traditional Māori life. Its strong, resilient timber was shaped into tools and weapons including digging sticks and spears. The leaves and bark were also used in rongoā Māori to ease inflammation, soothe pain, support healing, and could even be brewed as a tea.
