Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae | chain sword, tape-measure plant
A small, grass-like coastal plant associated with brackish habitats, tolerant of salt and variable water quality. It thrives in wet margins and shallow water, and is adaptable to a range of light conditions. The narrow, spear-shaped leaves form low, sometimes tangled mats of foliage, making it effective as a fine-textured ground cover. The plant spreads vegetatively by runners and rhizomes, allowing it to gradually colonise suitable sites.

The dense mat formed by this plant provides excellent shelter and hiding places for small fish. For this reason, it is also highly valued in the aquarium hobby, particularly as a foreground carpeting plant in natural-style aquascapes and nano tanks.
