A hardy grass that forms a clump of upright, narrow green leaves. Naturally found in coastal areas and on sandy or brackish soils, it is extremely tolerant of frost, drought, wind, and salt spray. This versatile plant can thrive in a variety of environments, from mixed borders and riverbanks to coastal wetlands. It is easily identified by its smooth, mid-green stems with orange tips, which are topped with round balls of dark brown flowers in the summer.
