Carex solandri | forest sedge, Solander’s sedge

 

A native sedge with dark to mid-green foliage that emerges upright before developing a soft, arching form. In summer, slender stems carry dark brown seed heads that add subtle seasonal interest. Naturally found along forest streams and damp ground beneath canopy cover, it thrives in partial shade with evenly moist soils. Well suited to woodland gardens, riparian edges, and restoration planting, this hardy sedge performs equally well in home gardens where a calm, layered groundcover is needed. It prefers damp conditions but will tolerate short dry periods once established.

Dense root mats help bind light soils, trapping sediment along banks and terrace edges. The clumps provide cover for skinks and habitat for invertebrates, while fallen seed and leaf litter support detrital food webs. It is particularly effective as a matrix species beneath kānuka–mānuka successional plantings.
