  • Dicksonia fibrosa | whekī-ponga, wheki-kōnga, kurīpākā, golden tree fern

A  common native tree fern, particularly prevalent in the south-central North Island. Forming a slender black trunk that, at maturity, is covered in a thick layer of fibrous roots and encircled by a distinctive skirt of dead fronds. Its large, upright, lime-green fronds create a spreading crown. Though slow-growing at about 10cm per year it thrives in a moist, humid, shady, and sheltered position, protected from strong afternoon sun and wind, making it ideal for adding a lush, tropical feel to shaded gardens. This low-maintenance fern can tolerate some full sun, but protection from harsh afternoon sun is key.
