mokimoki

foliage palette: dark green
  • Dendroconche scandens | mokimoki, fragrant fern

A slow-spreading climbing fern with thin, dark green fronds emerging from slender, scaly rhizomes. Juvenile fronds are small and undivided, creeping over the ground or rocks. As the plant matures and climbs, the fronds become larger, more divided, and softly drooping as they ascend tree trunks or scramble over rock faces.

This species requires consistently damp conditions, deep shade, and a tree or structure to climb. The fronds are pleasantly aromatic when crushed, adding to its appeal. Due to its specific habitat needs and limited availability, it is often considered a collector’s fern rather than a general garden plant.
