Western Northland
Western Northland stretches along the western coast of the Northland Region, including Ninety Mile Beach, Herekino, Whangape and Hokianga Harbours, encompassing the kauri-rich uplands of the Tutamoe, Maungataniwha, Tangihua, and Hokianga Ecological Districts. The region is shaped by rugged plateaus, volcanic and sedimentary hills, mobile dunes, and complex estuarine and wetland systems. Coastal dunes, sand country, and mangrove-lined harbours provide habitat for waders and wetland birds, while inland kauri–hardwood forests support species including kōkako, kākā and North Island brown kiwi. Much of the lowland and dune country is farmed or planted in exotic forestry, but forest remnants, regenerating scrub, wetlands, and harbours retain high biodiversity and northern endemic species.
