Scandia rosifolia | koheriki, native angelica

An attractive, eye-catching shrub endemic to New Zealand's North Island, typically growing to about 1 meter tall. It features glossy, dark green, pinnately divided leaves and produces small, fluffy heads of delicate white flowers in spring and summer, reminiscent of fennel blooms.Naturally found on coastal cliffs, banks, and open rocky areas as far south as Taranaki and Napier, koheriki thrives in full sun or light shade with well-drained soil. This nationally vulnerable species is ideal for exposed garden sites, offering both aesthetic appeal and significant ecological value.
This species has experienced a significant decline across much of its range. While it can still be locally common in some areas, many locations now only have small, scattered populations or even individual plants. This severe decline led to a change in its conservation status to 'Threatened – Nationally Critical'. The largest remaining populations are typically found on inaccessible cliffs, safe from all browsing animals, including possums.
