A sweeping coastal strip from Hawera to Paekākāriki transitioning inland to a plain extending towards mountain foothills. The coastal area is defined by a variety of extensive sand dunes and other coastal landforms, stretching along the coast. Inland, this gives way to a district that borders the coastal zone extending towards the base of the Ruahine and Tararua ranges.
