Extending from Hāwera to Paekākāriki, the Foxton Ecological District forms a sweeping coastal strip of dunes and coastal landforms. Inland, this transitions to the Manawatū Plains Ecological District, a fertile plain stretching toward the Ruahine and Tararua foothills.
