  • Pseudopanax crassifolius | lancewood, horoeka

A striking tree notable for its distinct juvenile phase, characterised by long, lance-shaped leaves ranging from dark green to bronze. As it matures, the leaves shorten and typically become dark green. Reaching up to 5 meters tall and 3 meters wide, it responds well to trimming. This slow-growing evergreen is a popular choice for mixed or native plantings, providing a strong contrast to more leafy plants, enhancing pool areas, or complementing modern architectural styles. Its narrow, green, softly-serrated juvenile leaves offer an architectural element even in small spaces, eventually developing into a bushy-topped tree with a clean, slender trunk that attracts pollinators. While hardy, young plants are sensitive to frost.
