Metrosideros fulgens | akatawhiwhi, climbing rātā
A distinctive New Zealand native forest vine that climbs like ivy, anchoring to trees with adventitious roots. Its juvenile shoots rapidly seek sunlight in warm, moist coastal and lowland forestss. This vine features glossy, oval dark green leaves and bright red, pohutukawa-like flowers from autumn to spring. When in bloom, its abundant flowers, can make the host tree appear to flower. Though it requires patience, this climbing rātā becomes remarkable once established, thriving near retaining walls or fences, and flowering earlier with full sun.
