Naturally found along coastlines, its drought-tolerant leaves make it perfect for coastal conditions, rock gardens, and xeriscaping. Its spreading habit provides excellent erosion control on slopes and banks, also working well in containers or mixed plantings.

Beyond its ornamental appeal, horokaka was historically valued as both food and medicine. Māori traditionally used the leaf juice to treat ailments like boils, abscesses, and itch, and recent studies suggest it may possess antibacterial properties. European settlers also consumed the plant's bland, fleshy capsules and pickled its leaves.
