Olearia paniculata | akiraho
A dense and fast-growing New Zealand native shrub or small tree, commonly used for hedging and now widely cultivated throughout the country. Naturally found in mature and regenerating forests and forest margins, primarily on the eastern side from East Cape to Golden Bay and Canterbury, it features distinctive golden-green foliage with slightly crinkled edges. In autumn, it produces clusters of vanilla-scented, creamy white flowers that attract wildlife. Hardy and tolerant of exposed and dry sites as well as coastal conditions, it can reach up to 6 meters in height, forming a dense hedge or low shelter with its papery leaves. Good drainage is essential, as it is intolerant of wet conditions.
