Waikato

The Waikato eco-region is a low-lying inland area made up of seven ecological districts. Meremere and Hapuakohe contain hill country with rare forest remnants and nationally important wetlands such as Whangamarino Swamp. The Hauraki, Hamilton, and Hinuera districts are dominated by farmed plains and basins, yet still protect significant wetlands like the Kopuatai Peat Dome. The volcanic forested hills of Maungatautari and Waipā provide vital refuges for native birds and preserve important forest remnants.
