  • Calystegia tuguriorum | pōwhiwhi, climbing convolvulus, New Zealand bindweed

A vigorous, twining perennial vine with distinctive heart-shaped leaves and large trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of white or pink. It grows best in well-drained soils and often climbs over surrounding plants or structures to reach sunlight. Its climbing habit, combined with its showy blooms, makes it a noticeable presence in the landscape and a plant sometimes chosen for ornamental gardens. It is easy to grow from seed or rooted cuttings, but once established it can spread vigorously and be difficult to remove. Best planted where its growth can be managed, it is particularly effective weaving through a hedge, where the large white flowers stand out beautifully while the creeping stems are more easily contained.
