Syzygium maire | swamp maire, maire tawake
Characterised by a buttressed trunk and aerial roots, it features small, pointed oval olive-green leaves that are often mottled and blistered. In spring, it produces small white flowers with prominent stamens, followed by red berries. Commonly found in swampy areas throughout the North Island, swamp maire thrives in damp conditions, requiring consistent moisture year-round and preferring some shelter. It is an excellent choice for revegetation projects and native plantings in damp locations.
