Te Waewae
The Te Waewae eco-region comprises three districts: Waitutu, a rugged basin with extensive podocarp and beech forests, is home to a rich and abundant birdlife, including kākā and rare plants. Tuatapere, with its low hills and cliffed coastline, is largely cleared for farming, but its remaining forests support falcons and parakeets. Finally, the Longwood district features hilly ranges with beech-podocarp forests, providing habitats for birds like the yellowhead, and a coastline with important estuarine birdlife.
