Coromandel

The Coromandel eco-region is made up of nine distinctive districts. Offshore, Little Barrier, the Mercury Islands, and Mayor Island are vital sanctuaries for endangered wildlife and showcase unique volcanic landforms. Great Barrier, the largest island, supports a rich reptile fauna. On the mainland, the forested districts of Colville, Thames, and Kaimai provide important habitats for brown kiwi as well as rare kauri and beech forests. The Tairua and Waihi districts, shaped by rhyolitic geology, contain unique forest remnants that support rare frog species
