foliage palette: mid-green
  • Cheilanthes distans | woolly rock fern, woolly cloak fern

A small tufted fern, typically reaching around 20 cm tall, characterised by its fronds that have a softly woolly look, with small white hairs above and rusty-brown hairs beneath, giving rise to its common name. This hardy fern thrives in lightly shaded to open dry habitats, often among rocky outcrops. It is particularly well suited to rock gardens and dryland plantings, though care is needed to protect it from slugs, which can damage new growth.
