Southern rātā

foliage palette: dark green
fruit & flower palette: red
  • Metrosideros umbellata| Southern rātā

A slow-growing tree featuring small, dark-green leaves, its main attraction is the vibrant red flowers that appear in summer as the tree matures, making it highly attractive to pollinators and birds. This tree trims well and is an excellent choice for coastal gardens, large mixed plantings, or as a specimen. A cold-climate relative of pōhutukawa, it can withstand frosts once established and is particularly well-suited to higher rainfall areas. While young plants need protection from frost, established Southern rātā requires minimal care and pruning. Cutting-grown specimens often flower early, providing a spectacular display.
