Tāwheowheo is a small tree that stands out with its unique bronze-green mottled coloration, especially prominent in young trees, often accented by occasional red and/or orange leaves. Its  leaves feature a wavy edge, sometimes with serrations the flower spikes can bear twenty to thirty individual flowers, typically white but sometimes tinged with pink or lilac. Being dioecious, male and female flowers reside on separate trees, meaning only the female trees will produce seed capsules from the flowers. It can grow up to 12m but is often seen as smaller bush or shrub like.
