  • Sophora microphylla | weeping kōwhai, small-leaved kōwhai

A striking tree characterised by its attractive fern-like foliage and a distinct juvenile phase where tangled branches can delay flowering for up to a decade. Upon maturity, it bursts into a profusion of nectar-rich yellow flowers in spring, making it a magnet for native birds and bees. This hardy tree will eventually develop a more open branching structure with age. While adaptable to cooler climates, wind, and less fertile soils, it flourishes in full sun and well-drained locations. Kōwhai is a popular choice for providing shade, as a standalone specimen, within native plant collections, and specifically for attracting local birdlife. To encourage healthy growth, it's recommended to plant in a sunny, well-drained spot, stake young trees for stability.
