The Gore Ecological District, located in inland Southland, is a region of plains and downlands largely converted to farmland. While its original red tussockland and forests are mostly gone, small remnants and river systems still provide vital habitats. These areas support native wildlife, including birds like parakeets, fernbirds, and various river-breeding species, as well as green skinks and native fish like the giant kōkopu.
