Clematis afoliata | pōhue, leafless clematis
Aptly named for its seemingly leafless appearance, is New Zealand's most unusual indigenous clematis. This sprawling, yellowish-green vine forms a tangled mass, bound by spiraling tendrils. It's an excellent pioneer species for early ecological restoration projects. In spring, it bursts into bloom with masses of fragrant, pale green to cream-colored flowers, followed by fruits in early summer. Growing up to 2m tall and wide, it can be trimmed as needed. Clematis afoliata makes an intriguing climber, especially where an unusual specimen is desired, and if unsupported, it forms an aesthetically appealing sprawling mass. It's crucial to grow this species from seed, as there are distinct male and female plants; cuttings will result in sterile flowering.
