This distinctive divaricating shrub, aptly named for its appearance, typically reaches about 2m in height, characterised by densely interlacing branches that create an intricate and unique architectural form. It thrives in scrubland and forest environments in the southern North Island and east of the main divide in the South Island. Its small, oblong leaves are leathery with finely toothed edges. In spring, it produces striking solitary dark red flowers. This shrub flourishes best in full sun.
