Aristotelia serrata | makomako, wineberry
A common sight throughout New Zealand, particularly in damp, disturbed forest edges. Its rapid growth and ease of establishment make it a valuable colonising species for revegetation projects. This versatile tree boasts panicles of rose-colored flowers in spring, followed by red-black berries that attract native birds. Its serrated green leaves, purplish underneath, add to its visual appeal. In colder climates, Makomako becomes semi-deciduous. It tolerates a range of conditions from full sun to moderate shade and wet soils.
